Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked black beans drained and mashed, leaving some chunky bits
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs or panko for lighter texture
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika for smoky depth
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice brightens the flavor
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion fresh for punch
  • 2 cloves minced garlic fresh or powder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for frying

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Spatula
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, mash the cooked black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunky bits for texture.
  2. Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, smoked paprika, lemon juice, and breadcrumbs to the mashed beans. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined; the mixture should hold together when pressed.
  3. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about 1.5 cm thick. Gently press the edges to ensure they hold together.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering and hot, with a gentle sizzling sound when the patties are added.
  5. Carefully place the patties into the hot skillet, cooking for about 4-5 minutes per side. Look for a golden brown crust and crispy edges as they cook, and listen for the crackling sound of beans and spices to know they’re crisping up nicely.
  6. Flip the patties gently with a spatula and cook the other side until equally golden and crispy. Adjust heat if they brown too quickly or cook unevenly.
  7. Once cooked through and crispy on the outside, transfer the patties to a plate and let them rest for 2 minutes. This helps them settle and hold together better when served.
  8. Serve the black bean burgers hot, topped with fresh greens or a smear of spicy mayo, with all your favorite toppings. Enjoy the crispy edges, smoky flavor, and tender interior with every bite!
