Ingredients

  • 6 pieces hot dogs beef, chicken, or veggie
  • 1 sheet puff pastry store-bought, cold but not frozen solid
  • 1 egg egg beaten for egg wash
  • small amount black sesame seeds or peppercorns for eyes
  • optional to taste ketchup or mustard for extra creepiness or flavor

Equipment

  • Baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Sharp Knife
  • Pastry brush
  • Small spoon or toothpick

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut it into six rectangles, roughly the size of your hot dogs.
  3. Slice each hot dog in half or thirds, depending on their size, to make them easier to wrap.
  4. Wrap each hot dog piece with strips of puff pastry, overlapping slightly and leaving small gaps for the eyes and mouth. Use your fingers to gently press the pastry edges together to seal.
  5. Place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart.
  6. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg using a pastry brush to give it a shiny, golden finish.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up, golden, and crispy. Keep an eye on them as they bake to prevent over-browning.
  8. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the mummies cool for a couple of minutes. Use a small spoon or toothpick to place two sesame seeds or peppercorns on each wrapped hot dog as creepy eyes. If desired, dab a tiny bit of ketchup or mustard for extra fun.
  9. Finally, transfer the finished mummies to a serving platter. They should be crispy, flaky, and topped with playful eyes, ready to impress your guests or family.

Notes

For extra fun, try using different kinds of eyes or adding tiny accessories with leftover pastry. These mummies are best enjoyed warm while the pastry remains crisp.
