Ingredients

  • 1 package chocolate instant pudding mix about 3.9 oz
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 package crushed chocolate cookies (like Oreos) about 15 cookies
  • 1 cup gummy worms variety of colors
  • 1 tbsp instant coffee or espresso powder optional, enhances chocolate flavor

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 9x13 inch serving dish or trifle bowl
  • Plastic wrap

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix with cold milk until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken, about 2-3 minutes. The pudding should be glossy and slightly set.
  2. Gently fold in the instant coffee or espresso powder, if using, for an extra depth of chocolate flavor.
  3. Spread a layer of crushed cookies evenly at the bottom of your serving dish to create a crunchy base that mimics dirt.
  4. Pour half of the chocolate pudding over the crushed cookies, smoothing it out with a spatula to create an even layer.
  5. Add another layer of crushed cookies on top of the pudding for additional texture.
  6. Pour the remaining pudding over the cookie layer, spreading it evenly to cover the entire surface.
  7. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the pudding to set properly.
  8. Once chilled, sprinkle the top with more crushed cookies for a dirt effect and scatter a handful of colorful gummy worms on top for a spooky, squirming finish.
  9. Gently press some gummy worms into the pudding to make them look like they’re crawling out of the dirt for a more chaotic, fun presentation.
  10. Serve slices of the messy, colorful dirt cake and enjoy the playful textures and flavors with friends or family.
