Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey, chicken, or plant-based meat
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumb for binding
  • 1 large egg helps hold meatballs together
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper ground
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese cut into thin strips
  • 1 cup tomato sauce for baking or serving

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Oven
  • Cooking twine or toothpicks
  • Baking parchment or silicone baking mat

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumb, egg, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together using your hands or a spoon until well incorporated and the mixture is slightly sticky.
  3. Use your hands to shape the mixture into small, evenly-sized meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them spaced apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through and browned on the outside. They should be firm and cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  5. Once cooked, remove the meatballs from the oven and let them cool slightly. Then, carefully cut small slits into each meatball without cutting all the way through—this will help in wrapping the cheese.
  6. Insert thin strips of mozzarella cheese into the slits, creating a mummy-like effect. Wrap the cheese around the meatball as best as you can, letting some cheese strands hang for that spooky, bandaged look.
  7. Place the wrapped meatballs back on the baking sheet. Optionally, you can add a few more cheese strips on top for extra mummy flair. Return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese melts and turns slightly golden.
  8. Warm the tomato sauce and serve the mummy meatballs on a platter, either dipped in the sauce or simply on their own. The melted cheese and savory meat combine into a fun, spooky bite perfect for Halloween.
